5 Questions With Kate Jean Hollowell
1) Can you talk briefly about your background, and how you first got interested in filmmaking?
I got interested in filmmaking because I enjoy doing things I'm completely unqualified for and that scare the shit out of me. I started out as a photographer and was feeling anxious to challenge myself and move into motion. I found myself on photoshoots thinking of film ideas that were funny and interesting so decided that was where I needed to put my energy. I've always been interested in films, but grew up watching mostly old Hollywood musicals with my dad.
2) What was the initial idea for this project and how did it evolve from there?
The idea for this was born from the death of both my parents. I'd carried around this heavy weight, trying to wake up to the reality of losing them both to cancer. I found myself getting out of the subway, pulling out my phone, reaching to call my dad... to only remind myself that he wasn't able to pick up.
Met with this new reality, you don't want to say goodbye. You don't want to let go of the traditions, experiences and familiarity that shape who you are. Reckoning with loss is part of the human experience and we sometimes fail to notice that we are not alone in our suffering. I wanted to figure out a way to capture that ever present weight and twist it in a light-hearted, musical way. Reminiscent of the musicals I was raised on.
3) What was the biggest challenge in making this film? And the easiest part?
The short was mostly improvised and I had no physical script. I had the narrative in my head and tried to capture real moments of honesty and sadness. The easiest part was the dance itself. It felt like a celebration.
4) What’s a film you’ve seen recently, new or old, that you really loved and why?
I feel like I'm supposed to say a cool film, but I really love the idea of saying 'Frozen 2'. Honestly, I rewatched 'Singing In The Rain' recently. I loved it as a kid and want to bring that film back to 2020 and update it with some dark comedy, among other things.
5) What’s next for you?
Maybe remaking 'Singing In The Rain' ? I'm working on other shorts and a sizzle for a tv show. I'm also releasing new music under the moniker "Number One Popstar" - watch out Steven Speilberg!
