5 Questions with Clara Goldfarb

1) Can you talk briefly about your background, and how you first got interested in filmmaking?

While in art school, I was drawn to experimental films made by artists like Vito Acconci and Carolee Schleeman. That moved me to study video art, and from there, filmmaking. For the decade or so after, I worked as a creative and video producer in the advertising industry. About 3 years back, I had this huge realization that I had always wanted to direct and was letting fear stop me. So here I am.

2) What was the initial idea and how did it evolve from there?

Ever since moving to LA, I’ve thought that the car is a primo place to have an adult temper-tantrum and a car freakout seemed apropos for the current climate. We consume huge amounts of news with no processing time and then have to perform our roles in society. For me, Woman Screaming in Car is about climate change, but for the viewer the film may be about something else, maybe something more personal.

3) What was the biggest challenge in making this film? And generally what part of the creative process do you enjoy the most?

I grossly underestimated how difficult it is to shoot in a car. We shot on an Alexa Classic, an enormous camera to use in a small, moving space. It caused a lot of drama. This project had a tight crew but we made it work, even with the issues. My favorite part about the creative process is without a doubt, the collaboration on set. Everyone is working toward the same goal and it feels really good to me.

4) What’s a film you’ve seen recently, new or old, that you really loved and why?

As a comfort during quarantine I’ve been revisiting the films I loved in the past. Just got to What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? It’s very human and earnest film with an incredible early 90’s cast.

5) What’s next for you?

Firstly, I’m so thrilled to be part of the NoBudge community and I’ll certainly be watching all the films that come out. My hope is to continue getting hired to direct commercial work and have some new opportunities in that space while continuing work on my first proper script. Things are a bit unknown right now, but we'll find the other side.
